Prevacid Drug Uses

Prevacid decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

How Taken

Prevacid comes as an extended-release (long-acting) capsule to take it orally. Prevacid usually is taken once a day, before a meal. Take Prevacid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. The capsule should be swallowed whole. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, Prevacid can be opened, and the granules can be sprinkled on applesauce and swallowed immediately. The granules should not be chewed or crushed. Continue to take Prevacid even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prevacid without talking to your doctor.

Prevacid Warnings/Precautions

Before taking Prevacid, tell your doctor if you ever have liver disease. You may not be able to take Prevacid, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Prevacid is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Prevacid without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Prevacid passes into breast milk. Do not take Prevacid without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Prevacid Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Prevacid Possible Side Effects

Serious side effects from Prevacid are not common. Stop taking Prevacid and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Prevacid and talk to your doctor if you experience
-diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain;
-dizziness; or
-headache.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Store Prevacid at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Prevacid Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of an Prevacid overdose are unknown.

Heartburn Basics
What is heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)? Get the facts.
Despite its name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart (although some of the symptoms are similar to a heart attack). Heartburn, also called acid indigestion, is an irritation of the esophagus caused by acid that refluxes (comes up) from the stomach.
When swallowing, food passes down the throat and through the esophagus to the stomach. Normally, a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens to allow food into the stomach (or to permit belching); then it closes again. Next, the stomach releases strong acids to help break down the food. But if the lower esophageal sphincter opens too often or does not close tight enough, stomach acid can reflux, or seep back into the esophagus, damaging it and causing the burning sensation we know as heartburn
Not only can stomach acid in the esophagus cause heartburn, but it can also cause esophagitis, ulcers, strictures (narrowing) and can increase the chance of cancer of the esophagus.
Most people have felt heartburn at one time or another. In fact, the American Gastroenterological Association reports that more than 60 million Americans experience heartburn/GERD symptoms at least once each month. Though uncomfortable, heartburn does not usually present a serious health problem for most people.
However, if heartburn symptoms occur frequently and persistently, they can be an indicator of a more serious problem, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Left untreated, GERD can cause a host of complications.
What Is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)?
GERD is a relatively common condition that affects from 5% to 7% of the population. It is a chronic reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. This problem manifests itself as several symptoms including heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Thus, if heartburn symptoms occur frequently (two or more times per week) and persistently, they are most likely caused by GERD.
The severity of GERD depends on lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction as well as the type and amount of fluid brought up from the stomach.
Treatments aim to reduce the amount of reflux or reduce the potential for damage to the esophageal lining from refluxed substances.
In addition, doctors recommend lifestyle and dietary modification to lessen acid reflux.
Causes of Heartburn
Various lifestyle and dietary factors can contribute to heartburn by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter and allowing it to open, increasing the amount of acid in the stomach, increasing stomach pressure, or by making the esophagus more sensitive to harsh acids. These factors include:

* Eating large portions.
* Eating certain foods, including onions, chocolate, peppermint, high-fat or spicy foods, citrus fruits, garlic, and tomatoes or tomato-based products.
* Drinking certain beverages, including citrus juices, alcohol, and caffeinated and carbonated drinks.
* Eating before bedtime.
Lifestyle Habits
* Being overweight.
* Smoking.
* Wearing tight-fitting clothing or belts.
* Lying down or bending over, especially after eating.
Medical Causes
* Pregnancy
* Bulging of the stomach into the chest cavity, also called hiatal hernia.
* GERD
* Taking certain medications, especially some antibiotics and aspirin.
